Our Spaces...

In so many ways, our MCR is a home away from home for graduate students. The Hertford College MCR inhabits the most outstanding and spectacular MCR building in the entire city: It is the 16th century Chapel of St. Mary at Smith’s Gate — a striking octagonal tower with iconic views across the historic Bodleian Library and Sheldonian Theatre.

Our physical spaces are located in the New Buildings (NB) Quad. Inside, you will find the beautiful Octagon Events Room, a newly renovated Tea room and our new Graduate Reading Room. You can have a peek at each of these rooms below!

The Octagon

The Octagon is a room that speaks for it self. This magical room is the primary social space of the MCR. It is here that our most iconic parties take place and where we host our wine and cheeses and film nights.

During the day, you will often find MCR members seating and chatting in this cosy space. Don't be scared to say 'Hi'!

Tea Room

Our newly refurbished Tea room is the place to go if you fancy a cup of tea or coffee! By paying the MCR coffee levy you can get coffee from our new coffee machine for only a few pounds per term making it not only a deal, a steal but also the sale of the century!

This is also where we host our biweekly welfare teas, run by the Welfare Officer.

Reading Room

This recently refurbished Reading room offers MCR members a quiet space to work and is open 24/7 (please, don't work 24/7!)

It's available should you ever need to study/work but it is also a quiet space or breakout room should you need it. Bring your cuppa from the tea room, upstairs and settle in with your book! FYI this room, like most our spaces have terrific views to the city.
